Avoid eye infections.
Disasters can resultin unsanitary conditions and unavoidable poor personal hygiene, which can lead to eye infections. Make sure you avoid rubbing or touching areas near your eyes
to avoid spreading infection from contaminated hands. Untreated eye infections that continue to spread can be extremely serious and may even lead to blindness.
Learn basic first-aid for eye trauma.
The University of Houston College of Optometry helped treat patients at the Astrodome during Hurricane Katrina. University dean Dr. Earl Smith reported that “eye and vision care services were accessed more than the care from any other discipline.” Of course, you should always seek professional treatment for any eye trauma, but if you find yourself in an emergency situation, remember the following first-aid tips for eyes, from the University of Chicago:
For cuts in or around the eye:
- Bandage the eye gently. If no bandages are available, you can protect it from further damage through methods such as taping on a small bowl or the bottom of a styrofoam cup as a shield.
- Do not rub the eye or apply pressure.
- Do not try to remove any particles.
- Do not wash out the eye.
When foreign particles enter the eye:
- Pull the upper lid down onto lower lid and let lower eyelashes sweep away the particle by blinking repeatedly.
- Let tears wash out the speck or particle, or use an eye wash.
- Close your eye if the above procedure does not work.
- Do not rub the eye.

For chemical splashes:
- Use fingers to separate lids, then flush the eye with clean, preferably bottled water.
- Cover the eye.
For physical trauma to the eye:
- Gently apply small cold compresses without pressure to reduce pain and swelling.
