VisionTip: Protect your eyes

‘Snow blindness’ (photokeratitis) is sunburn damage to the cornea of the eye caused by UV radiation.

This painful condition can be associated with temporary vision loss for up to 48 hours. It is thought that UV exposure may contribute to other eye conditions including cataracts, pterygium and age-related macular degeneration. Suggestions on protecting your eyes include:

  • Always wear wraparound sunglasses or goggles. Aim for a snug fit, so that sunlight can’t shine over the top or sides of your eyewear.
  • Choose eyewear that meets the Australian Standard AS1067. This means that the glasses will block 95 per cent of UV radiation.
  • Yellow or brown tinted lenses are more effective at counteracting the ‘blue’ glare on snow.
  • Sunglasses and goggles can be fitted with prescription lenses, if necessary. See your optometrist for more information.
  • Brimmed hats can block at least half of UV radiation from reaching the eyes.

This is possibly one of the most uncanny optical illusions in existence. No matter how hard you look, you may not be able to convince yourself that the two squares are the identical shade of grey.

To check, try one of these methods:
Right click the large picture, save it to your hard drive, put it into your image editor, “select” square A and then pull it down onto square B. There will be an exact match in colour!
Perhaps even easier than the above, if you place your finger covering the two to three squares that separate A and B, it can clearly be seen that they are the same color. In other words, forcefully ignoring the borders between the squares.

- Amodal perception is the term used to describe the full perception of a physical structure when it is only partially perceived. For example, a table will be perceived as a complete volumetric structure even if only part of it is visible; the internal volumes and hidden rear surfaces are perceived despite the fact that only the near surfaces are exposed to view.

- Color perception -

- Depth perception is the visual ability to perceive the world in three dimensions. It is a trait common to many higher animals. Depth perception allows the beholder to accurately gauge the distance to an object.

As the autumn trees turn crimson and gold, the days grow cooler, and we swap swimsuits for sweaters, it’s easy to forget about sunglasses, in particular, and eye health in general. But the change of season brings its own eye-care challenges, particularly for outdoor enthusiasts. Whether you’re shredding the slopes or just sledding down your driveway, protecting your vision will help you have a wonderful winter.

Don’t be fooled: Though the sun may feel less intense than during the summer, that doesn’t mean you don’t need eye protection. In the winter months, the sun sits lower in the sky and at a different angle, which may expose you to more ultraviolet light and glare. The risk can be just as significant on gray, overcast days as on clear, sunny ones.

Skiers, snowboarders, and other winter-sports lovers should pay particular attention to their eyes, as snow reflects more ultraviolet radiation than any other surface. “People forget the sun is just as bright glinting off snow as it is off the ocean and beach,” says ophthalmologist Anne R. Sumers, M.D. In addition, the higher you are above sea level, the less radiation is filtered. Because of snow’s reflective nature, up to 85 percent of the sun’s UV rays may be reflected upward. UV light can contribute to cataract formation and retina problems later in life. In fact, the glare of the winter sun is so powerful, it can actually burn your eyes.

Essential Eye Nutrient – Alpha-Lipoic Acid

Essential Nutrient #1: Alpha-Lipoic Acid

Vision Care

Red meat is the richest food source of alpha-lipoic acid (ALA), which has been called the “universal,” “ideal,” and “ultimate” antioxidant. According to the UC Berkeley Wellness Letter, “What makes ALA special as an antioxidant is its versatility – it helps deactivate an unusually wide array of cell-damaging free radicals in many bodily systems.”
ALA also helps “recycle” vitamins C and E and other antioxidants, thus making them much more effective.

Essential Nutrients against the oxidative stress we encounter as we age.
