Unusual light sensitivity or photophobia is often a symptom of other disorders, like migraine headaches. Photophobia happens when the muscle structure found in the eye’s colored portion (iris) does not constrict properly so it does not reduce the amount of light that enters through the eye’s pupil.
Exposure to too much light could be painful, as can happen when the eye is artificially dilated for an eye exam. An inflammation of the eye could hamper how the eye normally would respond to light.
The best treatment for light sensitivity is to treat the underlying cause. Usually, once the problem is addressed, the photophobia disappears. If you are taking a medication that causes light sensitivity, talk to the prescribing physician about discontinuing it or replacing it with another drug, if possible.
Of course, if you’re sensitive to excessive light, don’t go into the bright sunlight and other bright lights. Wear wide-brimmed hats and sunglasses with ultraviolet (UV) protection.
