If you think “omega-3s” sounds like some sort of college fraternity, you’re not alone. Only in the past few years have scientists begun to enumerate the myriad benefits of these health-giving fatty acids, which have been called “the miracle food of the 21st century.”
Among these benefits: preventing heart disease, maintaining optimum blood pressure and cholesterol levels, and providing relief from joint pain, migraines, depression, autoimmune diseases, and many other conditions.
But that’s, as they say, not all.
As in other areas of preventive health, it seems that the long-chain omega-3s in fish may help protect our vision as we age. These omega-3s help protect against cataracts, glaucoma, and age-related macular degeneration—even dry eyes.
Omega-3 fats appear to help prevent optic nerve disorders, the most common of which is glaucoma. Various studies have revealed that Greenland Eskimos have lower rates of glaucoma than other populations, an observation attributed to their high consumption of omega-3 fish oil. (This finding is similar to the Japanese having lower rates of cancer than Western countries, also attributed to that country’s high consumption of omega-3-containing fish.)
In a cataract study done by Walter Willet, a professor of Epidemiology and Nutrition at Harvard University’s School of Public Health, the 20 percent of participants who consumed the most fish—and hence the greatest amount of long-chain omega-3 fatty acids (EPA [eicosapentaenoic acid] and DHA from fish)—had a 12 percent lower risk of cataract surgery, compared with the 20 percent of participants who consumed the least fish.
In a study published last year in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, the investigators wrote that “women with a higher intake of [omega-3 fatty acids] tended to have a lower risk of dry-eye syndrome than did women with a lower intake.”
Finally, researchers from the University of Sydney reported that consumption of fatty acids found in fish helps in preventing age-related macular degeneration, a deterioration of the retina that leads to blindness. AMD is one of the leading causes of blindness and vision impairment in older Americans.
People who ate fish at least once a week were 40 percent less likely to develop early ARM (age-related maculopathy (ARM), the leading cause of vision loss among the elderly) than those who ate fish less than once per month. People who ate fish three times a week had a substantially lower risk of advanced macular degeneration.
It all sounds too good to be true—so what’s the catch?
Doctors call this class of fat “essential” because, unlike many nutrients, our bodies cannot produce it. The fatty acids in cell membranes need constant replenishment by diet, and omega-3s exist in a delicate balance with another group of needed fats, omega-6s.
The trouble is, most Americans consume too few of the omega-3s and too much of the omega-6s, which crowd out the omega-3s. The omega-6s are found in many vegetable oils, such as corn and soy, that permeate processed foods.
Also, though the American Heart Association recommends eating fish at least twice a week as a source for omega-3 fatty acids, there is widespread concern about mercury contamination of fish. People who want to avoid excessive fish consumption because of concerns about mercury should get omega-3s through supplements, the association says.
And even if you try to get omega-3’s through your diet, it can be extremely difficult to get the amounts that the research shows it takes to improve and protect to your vision, as well as support your heart and brain function.
So to solve these problems, I went to one of the nations top nutritional supplement manufacturers in a quest to develop an omega-3 supplement that not only gives you enough omega-3’s on a daily basis to obtain the desired health benefits, but that’s also free of mercury and heavy metals.
It’s called the Rebuild Your Vision Ocular Omega-3 Formula and it’s now available exclusively to Rebuild Your Vision customers.
The Rebuild Your Vision Ocular Omega-3 Formula contains 1,000 mg of high-quality omega-3’s (EPA and DHA). If you look on the label of most omega-3 supplements you’ll find that they actually contain very little EPA and DHA omega-3’s, which are the real measure of quality of an omega-3 supplement.
The Rebuild Your Vision Ocular Omega-3 Formula is derived from deep sea, cold water fish oils that go through a special molecularly distilling process to remove mercury and heavy metals, so you can rest assured you’re getting pure, clean, omega-3 fatty acids.
