Although not written about frequently, there is an eye condition you need to be aware of – a Cataract.

What is a cataract?  A cataract is the clouding of the eye’s lens, that part of the eye responsible for focusing light and producing clear sharp images.  A cataract may lead to blindness if left untreated.

Why do you need to be aware of this?  Simply because more than half of all Americans develop cataracts by age 80.  Cataract surgery is the number one surgical procedure in the United States. Roughly 1.5 million procedures are performed annually.

Cataracts are most prevalent in people over 60. They can occur at any age.  In younger people a chronic medical condition, eye trauma and even certain prescription drugs trigger them.  There are even congenital cataracts in infants.

Contrary to an old wives’ tale, cataracts are not made worse by close work such as reading, sewing or watching T.V.

For adults, smoking, steroid use and certain vitamin and mineral deficiencies may trigger a cataract.  Also prolonged exposure to sunlight, namely ultraviolet B rays, is a risk factor.  People with Diabetes, myotonic dystrophy and Wilson’s disease have a higher risk as well as women and African-Americans.

Cataracts cause no pain.  They develop slowly. It takes a few months to several years.  Some common symptoms are: Blurred or fuzzy vision, distorted images, double vision, fading of colors,
sensitivity to light and glare at night and frequent changes in eyeglass prescriptions.

For some people a cataract stops developing early and there is only a slight decrease in vision.  For others vision is impaired and treatment is necessary. The best time to remove a cataract is when the person’s quality of life is affected.

What does the surgery consist of?  A small incision is made.  buy The cloudy lens of the eye is removed and replaced by an artificial lens.  Many don’t even need stitches.

Normally the surgery is done on an outpatient basis with local anesthesia. The patient goes home the same day. Are there any complications from the surgery?  For some patients, a thin membrane
may develop months or years behind the lens which is implanted.  This is corrected with laser treatment.
