It is amazing when we realize the capability of the function of our eyes, our brain and our vision. I mean think about it! Everything concerning our vision works together in such an amazing way.

1 - We look at something, we see it, our brain processes it. That in itself is amazing when we really think about this process.

2 - We daydream, and in our mind, we actually see what we are daydreaming about. So, our “daydreams” are really another way of “looking” at something and our brain processes this the same as if we actually saw what we were daydreaming about. Now, how complex is this?

3 - And then, we dream. Now, our brain can actually shut off the mechanism that makes us physically respond to what we see in our dreams.

In real life, we would run away from a tiger chasing us. Now, since in our dreams, this scenario is exactly the same, and we see it the same, we would run too! But, our brain was smart enough to stop us from being able to physically react to what we see in our dreams. We can’t run away from the tiger in our dreams…Thank Goodness!

See how complicated it all gets.

We often take our sight, our seeing and our vision for granted, but, we should not. Our whole vision system is more complex than any made made computer!

Neurology of sleep and dreams

There is no universally agreed biological definition of dreaming. General observation shows that dreams are strongly associated with rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, during which an electroencephalogram shows brain activity to be most like wakefulness. Participant-nonremembered dreams during non-REM sleep are normally more mundane in comparison. During a typical lifespan, a human spends a total of about six years dreaming (which is about 2 hours each night. It is unknown where in the brain dreams originate, if there is a single origin for dreams or if multiple portions of the brain are involved, or what the purpose of dreaming is for the body or mind.

During REM sleep, the release of certain neurotransmitters is completely suppressed. As a result, motor neurons are not stimulated, a condition known as REM atonia. This prevents dreams from resulting in dangerous movements of the body.
