For those of you who have already been dependent on glasses for a number of years, then I have something encouraging to say to you too. Your eyes are so versatile that you can reverse the effects that your glasses have had on your vision. In fact some people can completely cure their vision problems within the first month of proper eye training. The exercises can even work on eyesight problems that have been caused by ageing.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s a few important bits of information for you in your quest to improve your eyesight naturally:</p>
<p><strong>Teaching your eyes to Relax</strong></p>
<p>As simple as it may sound, simply teaching your eyes to relax can have a major impact on your vision. Your eyes are extremely sensitive to strain especially with our modern common lifestyle of working in front of computers, watching the television and reading books. Eye strain can even occur without you noticing it &#8211; most of the time there are no symptoms in terms of feeling, you just start to notice a deterioration in your vision.</p>
<p>One exercise that I always recommend to someone who is suffering for eye strain is called palming. It&#8217;s a very simple, easy exercise with a great success rate. When this exercise is performed consistently for a few weeks the results are often very encouraging.</p>
<p><strong>Here&#8217;s what you do:</strong></p>
<p>Put your hands out in front of you with your palms facing in the eye. Then bring your palms up to cover your arms making sure that the hands are cupped so that they don&#8217;t actually make contact with your eyes. Put your elbows on your desk or another hard surface and try to make yourself comfortable. Now you simply spend as long as you need to generate relaxing and positive thoughts. You should try and concentrate on relaxing all the muscles in your eye &#8211; this will be hard to begin with but after a while you get used to it.</p>
<p>Palming is especially recommended for those who work in front of a computer for extended periods of time or who find themselves straining to focus on objects.</p>
<p><strong>Specific Eye Exercises</strong></p>
<p>There are a large number of eye exercises out there for specific conditions. For example, there are many exercises that focus purely on myopia (short sightedness) and teach the eye to adjust to objects that are far away.</p>
<p>William Bates is the pioneer for these exercises &#8211; his work and understanding of natural vision was way ahead of his time. He has been dead over 7 decades now yet his work is still at the foundation of most eye exercise programs and for great reason too &#8211; it works.</p>
<p><strong>Vision Without Glasses</strong></p>
<p>Hopefully you&#8217;ve found this article useful in your quest to improve your vision naturally. Just by researching the exercises you are already ahead of the majority but now you should take action. It is easy to be a skeptic (I certainly was) but you have nothing to lose and everything to win by simply taking a leap of faith and trying the exercises for a few weeks. <p>Though this year’s winter weather has been unseasonably warm for some, we remind you that overexposure to the winter sun’s powerful ultraviolet rays without proper eye protection can contribute to macular degeneration and cause cataracts or even photokeratitis (like a sunburn of your eye).</p>
<p>And you don’t have to be on the ski slopes to be at risk. The American Osteopathic Association notes that since many people associate winter with gray skies, they leave sunglasses behind. When the sun comes out unexpectedly, they end up exposed without proper protection. The association warns, “Appropriate eye protection should be worn when shoveling snow, putting up or taking down holiday decorations, or just going for a walk.” (Or when you’re raking those fallen leaves.) The best way to safeguard vision is to avoid excessive UV exposure.</p>
<p>The AOA recommends lenses that block 99 to 100 percent of both UV-A and UV-B radiation. Ski goggles are useful for activities in which debris and snow can blow into the eyes (yard work, shoveling or plowing snow, sports, etc.)</p>
<p>The sun is not winter’s only eye hazard. Cool winds and dry air can irritate eyes, even in warmer climates. Indoor heat tends to eliminate moisture from the air. Artificial tears can help when you’re outdoors, and adding humidifiers throughout the house will increase indoor humidity levels.</p>
<p><strong>Zeaxanthin &#8211; Not Just for Thanksgiving Anymore</strong></p>
<p>Roasted butternut squash. Crisp green salad. Creamy corn pudding. Spicy pumpkin pie. Along with turkey, these are some of the dishes we associate with Thanksgiving. <p>The Vision Council of America (VCA) reminds drivers that “part of adjusting to Daylight Saving Time means being prepared to face harsh glare on the roads.” The sun’s glare is one of the most overlooked dangers while driving, causing thonds of injuries each year, particularly during morning and evening commutes.</p>
<p>“It may seem like common sense, but most of us are caught off guard by the effect the time change has on our visibility while we’re driving,” notes ophthalmologist Frank J. Weinstock, M.D. “In addition to changing the clocks, there are a few simple things we need to remember this time of year to protect our vision and make sure we’re safe on the road.”</p>
<p><strong>The VCA recommends the following steps to ensure driver safety:</strong></p>
<p>* Lower visors to help block reflected light<br />
* Avoid using high-gloss vinyl cleansers on dashboards<br />
* Keep the car’s windshield clean  super  and the windshield fluid full<br />
* If possible, choose an alternate route to avoid one with extreme glare<br />
* Turn on your headlights so oncoming drivers can see you<br />
* Wear sunglasses with polarized lenses</p>

<p>It also predicted that the total number of people living with diabetes will skyrocket to 380 million within 20 years if nothing is done. In the U.S., rates of diabetes DOUBLED from 1990 to 2005. We’re now spending $116 billion to treat the 23.6 million people—or 7.8% of the population—with diabetes. If trends continue unchanged, 1 out of every 3 children born in 2000 will develop diabetes in their lifetime. While you may know, in general, that diabetes is “bad,” leading to health complications as varied as kidney failure, nerve damage, and stroke, did you know that diabetes can also affect your vision?</p>

Humans break down our digested food into a sugar called glucose, which is our main source of fuel. In a healthy where to buy person, the hormone insulin helps glucose enter the cells. But diabetics fail to produce enough insulin, or their bodies do not properly use it, so their cells starve while glucose builds up in their blood. There are two predominant types of diabetes. In Type 1, the immune system destroys the cells in the pancreas that make insulin.</p>
<p>In Type 2, which accounts for an estimated 90% to 95% of all cases, the body&#8217;s cells are not sufficiently receptive to insulin, or the pancreas makes too little of it, or both. <strong>Diabetes and Vision</strong> Diabetes is the number-one cause of blindness in the U.S. According to All About Vision, “Although diabetics have a high sugar count in the blood, along with insufficient insulin production, the real damage is done by lack of oxygen.</p>
<p>Because the eyes have such tiny blood vessels and yet need a lot of blood (and therefore oxygen), diabetes can cause a great deal of damage. The blood vessels in the eyes can leak, which can cause scarring and loss of vision.” The most common vision complication from diabetes is diabetic retinopathy (damage to the retina caused by diabetes); almost 6 million Americans have it. Symptoms include blurred vision; floaters; and shadows, or missing areas of vision—although many people show no symptoms before major bleeding occurs in the eye. This is what makes diabetes such a pernicious disease; its damage creeps up on you, compounding slowly and silently year after year. Diabetes can also alter the clear tissue covering the front of the eye. Decreased corneal sensation has been noted, and swelling of the corneal tissue can reduce vision, sometimes dramatically, in people with this disease. And as if that weren’t enough, overall the risk of cataracts is 2 to 4 times greater in diabetics as compared to those without the disease—perhaps even as high as 15 to 25 times greater in those with Type 1 diabetes.</p>
<p><strong>A Note about Hispanic Americans</strong> Hispanic Americans are especially at risk for diabetes and its related eye problems. Among Hispanic-Americans older than 40, 1 in 5 is diabetic, and almost half have diabetic retinopathy, the leading cause of vision loss and blindness in this ethnic group. <strong>What You Can Do</strong> Because damage to the eye develops slowly, early detection of diabetes and control of blood sugar through diet and medications can make a crucial difference in saving vision. Make sure to have a baseline eye-disease screening by age 40, when early signs of disease and changes in vision may start to occur. If you’ve already been diagnosed with diabetes, the most important thing you can do to protect your vision is to control your blood sugar.</p>
<p>The Diabetes Control and Complications Trial determined that control of a patient&#8217;s blood sugar is critical in reducing the rate, as well as the progression, of retinopathy. In addition to controlling their blood sugar, people with diabetes should work with their primary care physician to control their blood pressure, since both are important to slowing the development of retinopathy. The second element in safeguarding your vision is to get annual dilated eye exams with your eye doctor. As with most health conditions, making positive changes in your diet and exercise helps to both prevent diabetes and manage it if you have it.</p>
<p>Start now: Ignore the piles of Halloween candy in the grocery store and opt for an apple or a handful of almonds instead. Read the labels on packaged foods—if you can’t pronounce an ingredient, or don’t know what it is, chances are you shouldn’t eat it. Take a walk around the block, no matter the weather. And when those autumn leaves start to fall, rake them up, jump in them, and rake them up again! Happy fall, from all of us here at Rebuild Your Vision.</p>

<p>Whether your eyes are blue, brown, or green—or somewhere in between these three most common shades—their hue reveals more about you than just what color shirt you’ll look good in.</p>
<p>It’s long been known that eye color is a predictor of certain diseases. For instance, people with blue or other light-colored eyes are known to be more light-sensitive. This is because they have less pigment to protect them from sunlight, which puts them at greater risk for macular degeneration and cataracts. An increased risk of uveal melanoma has been found in those with blue, green, or gray iris color. And a yellowing of the whites of the eyes is one of the signs of liver disease, including malaria and hepatitis.</p>
<p>But recently, attention has been paid to the connection between eye color and sports performance. A study at the University of Louisville found that brown-eyed people were better at fast-paced activities that involved quick reaction times, such as hitting a baseball or boxing, while blue-eyed people performed better in self-paced athletic tasks, such as hitting a golf ball or throwing a baseball.</p>
<p>Other studies have also claimed that brown-eyed people or those with dark-colored irises react faster, due to quicker reflexes, as compared to light-eyed people. Dark-eyed men hit a tennis ball better than light-eyed men in forehand rallies and hit a target with a Frisbee more times than light-eyed students. These faster reaction times may be explained by another test: it has been found that dark-eyed subjects are more responsive to arousing visual and auditory stimuli than light-eyed subjects.</p>
<p>If you’re a blue-eyed athlete, don’t despair: There are some reports that blue-eyed folks are better “strategy thinkers” than those with dark eyes. That is probably why they are good at sports like golf or other activities that require planning and time-structuring.</p>
<p>Richard A. Sturm, a fellow at the Institute for Molecular Bioscience at the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia, notes that  trial  “these reports are mixed: about half see some effect, the others not.” More research needs to be done.</p>
<p>And what about those babies who are born with one eye color and in a few years develop another? Often, newborns have blue eyes (this is possibly the origin of the expression “baby blues”), which change to green, hazel, light brown, or dark brown. It is thought that exposure to light after birth triggers the production of melanin in the iris. At around the age of 3, children’s eyes have produced and stored enough melanin to indicate their natural shade.<br />

<p>While changes in infants’ eye color are fairly common, even in adults, eye color can change. &#8220;Some eyes become darker, but most become lighter with increasing age,&#8221; says Sturm. Eyes, unlike skin and hair, do not synthesize color pigment continuously. Instead, eyes keep pigment granules made earlier. So, if the pigment degrades, most often as a result of exposure to the sun, the eye color lightens.</p>
<p>So, while these results are interesting, the science is not yet strong enough to tell if your blue-eyed son should try out for the Yankees or emulate Tiger Woods. However, scientists have concluded that the mutation for blue eyes probably arose in a single individual in the Near East 6,000 to 10,000 years ago—suggesting that your son and all other people with blue eyes come from the same ancestor.</p>

<p>A Case of Cataract<br />

<p>One day as I entered the clinic I found a little white-haired woman waiting patiently to be treated. I had not seen her before, and did not know what her trouble was. The usual crowd of patients was waiting for Dr. Bates and myself, so when he said to me, &#8220;See what you can do for this woman,&#8221; I did not ask any questions, for I knew that whatever the condition of her eyes relaxation would help her.</p>
<p>I placed her four feet from the test card, at which distance she read the forty line (read by the eye with normal vision at forty feet), and told her how to rest her eyes by palming and how to avoid staring by shifting from one side of a letter to another. These practices helped her so much that before she left she was able to read the thirty line.</p>

<p>Later I learned that she had first seen Dr. Bates in March, 1919, and that she had incipient cataract of both eyes. In October. 1916. she had visited another dispensary where an operation was advised when the on line   cataracts were ripe. I also learned that in spite of her seventy-three years she worked hard every day for her living, being employed in an orphan asylum where she mended the children&#8217;s clothes. The fact that she was very deaf I saw for myself, of course, at the first interview, for I had to scream to make her hear. Her courage and cheerfulness under circumstances that might have daunted the bravest spirit were amazing. Her .face was always radiant with smiles, and she was so witty, and so appreciative of everything that was done ,for her, that each one of her visits to the clinic was a pleasure to me.</p>
<p>&#8220;I have so much to be thankful for,&#8221; she said one day. &#8220;I know I will see all right again. They ate waiting to operate at the abler dispensary, and I am waiting to fool them.&#8221;</p>
<p>The orphanage is about two miles from the clinic, and often she walks the entire distance rather than bother waiting for a car. She insists after these feats that she isn&#8217;t a bit tired. One day there were no cars running;and the walking was so bad that a friend urged her not to go out unless she was prepared to swim. She came just as usual, however. Why should she stay in, she asked, because other people were afraid to go out. She wasn&#8217;t tired either, and she hadn&#8217;t even got her feet wet. She just dodged the snowdrifts.</p>
<p>Most patients frown when they cannot see a letter, but my little cataract patient smiles instead and remarks cheerfully, &#8220;That&#8217;s the time you got me.&#8221;</p>
<p>One day she did not do as well as usual, and I found that the people in the place where she worked had been saying unpleasant things. I told her she must try not to let things of this sort disturb her, because that made her strain and made the cataracts worse.</p>
<p>&#8220;Well,&#8221; she said, &#8220;it is mighty hard not to worry; but I&#8217;ll try not to.&#8221;</p>
<p>At a recent visit she explained that she wouldn&#8217;t he able to do very well because she hadn&#8217;t had time to practice.</p>
<p>&#8220;Never mind,&#8221; I said. &#8220;Just do as well as you can.&#8221; Without her knowing it I placed her two feet farther from the card .than usual. Then I told her to palm, and after a short time I pointed to a small letter on the bottom line and asked her if she could see it. She recognized it immediately. Then I pointed to another, but she was so eager to see it that she tried too hard and failed. She closed her eyes for a few minutes without palming, and when she opened them she read the whole line. I then told her that she was two feet farther away from the card than she usually was. She was very happy about this and said, &#8220;That&#8217;s the time you fooled me.&#8221;</p>
<p>She has since become able to read the bottom line at ten feet, and one day she read&#8217; it at eleven feet, without knowing it and without having done any practicing at home. On sunshiny days she can read the &#8220;W. H. Bates, M.D.&#8221; on Dr. Bates&#8217; card, and for over a month she has done all her sewing without glasses. There is no doubt that she is going to fool them at the other dispensary.</p>
<p>Along with the improvement in her eyes has gone a considerable improvement in her hearing. Noises in her ears which she describes as a &#8220;ringing and a singing&#8221; are promptly relieved by palming, and she says that the relief, which at first was only temporary, is now becoming more constant. She also says that she hears conversation better than she used to.</p>

<p>Herman Snellen, a Dutch ophthalmologist, designed the first eye chart, which measures visual acuity. Sounds complicated, but it&#8217;s not, really.  Referred to as the Snellen Chart, it was developed in 1862 and is still used today. One of those things  one a day  that just didn&#8217;t need any changes through the years. He set the baseline of measurement at 20 feet. (The approximate distance at which light rays do not require our eyes to bend the rays to focus them upon the retina.)</p>

<p>Snellen set this standard of 20/20 vision to represent &#8220;normal sight,&#8221;.  Or,it is what a person with normal vision could see at a distance of 20 feet.</p>
<p>This means that a person with 20/40 vision must be 20 feet away to read what he or she should be able to read at 40 feet; a person with 20/85 vision must be 20 feet away to read what he or she should be able to read at 85 feet away, and so on.</p>
<p>There is another chart that measures near vision (nearsighted).</p>
