<p><span style="font-family: Arial;">I hope this never happens to you.  I know 3 personal friends who have <strong>Macular Degeneration</strong>, 2 age related and 1 inherited. You just might be taking a walk one day, and then, look at a tall straight tree that has been there for all your walks, and all of a sudden you find that it is wavy instead of straight.  And, most people kind of feel like &#8220;What Is This&#8221; and do not even connect it with vision. At first that is.</span></p>
<div><span style="font-family: Arial;"><strong>The most common type of macular degeneration is called &#8220;age-relatedp-macular-degeneration&#8221;.</strong></span></div>
<div><span style="font-family: Arial;"><br />
<a title="How Macular Degeneration Affects Vision and What You Can Do About It" href="http://www.rebuild-your-vision.com/2011/06/how-macular-degeneration-affects-vision-and-what-you-can-do-about-it/">Age related macular degeneration</a>, also referred to as AMD or ARMD, is now the leading reason for vision loss and leading to legal blindness in North Americans age 65 +.  <strong>The macula</strong> is a part of the retina. Here are some of the risk factors involved, and remember, always check it out with your eye specialist.  Don&#8217;t fool around with this.</span></div>

<div><span style="font-family: Arial;"><strong>Staying Out In The Sun</strong> &#8211; </span></div>
<div><span style="font-family: Arial;">These are just a few obvious risk factors.  The best is that you go regularly to the eye doctor.</span></div>
<div><span style="font-family: Arial;"> </span></div>
<div><span style="font-family: Arial;">AMD is a very slow moving eye disease, and it usually can even take years to fully run it&#8217;s course.  So now you ask, what are some of the symptoms?   Well, like mentioned at the beginning, straight obstacles, like poles, building, will begin to look wavy.  And, where it will be most noticably is in your central vision, that is where it starts.  You may sense &#8220;empty or black spots&#8221; in your central vision.  Also, you may have a hard time identifying people&#8217;s faces.</span></div>

<p><span style="font-family: Arial;">Macular Degeneration actually comes in two forms called wet and dry.  The dry is the most common, the aging one. The “wet” form (my best friend has this one) is the one that is responsible for 90 % of the cases that cause legal blindness.</span></p>
<p><strong>So far there is no cure, but, you can lower the risk and even slow the progression of the dry ARMD</strong>.</p>
<p><strong>1. Quit the smoking.  That&#8217;s the first thing</strong> and eye doctor will tell you.</p>

<p><span style="font-family: Arial;"><strong>2. Don&#8217;t leave the house without your sunglasses. </strong> UV protection could actually be an important tip for preventing AMD.</span></p>
<p><strong>3. Control your blood pressure.</strong>  Controlled blood pressure has shown to lower the risk substantially.</p>

<div><span style="font-family: Arial;"><strong>4. As Mom always said, eat your fruits and vegetables!</strong> There are many studies and researched data that shows that eating the rainbow colors of fruits and veggies, on a regular basis, will help prevent AMD.  </span></div>

<strong>5. Actually, try to improve your whole lifestyle.</strong>  And, lose the saturated and trans fat, <strong><a href="http://www.experts-at.com/Abundance/LifesAbundanceOmega3.htm">and include omega 3- fatty acids in your diet,</a></strong></span></div>

And again, make sure you go for regular eye check ups.  And, always be aware of changes in your eyes.</span></div>

Lane, O.D., from the Nutritional Optometry  Institute in New Jersey, says, <em>“Americans are getting less chromium and much  more of its major antagonist, vanadium (a trace element) because of recent  dietary trends to large marine fish and poultry.”</em></span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: Arial;">In the very numerous studies  that Dr. Lane has done in the last 20  years found that <em>“low levels of chromium are a major risk factor for  increased intraocular pressure.” </em></span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: Arial;">Chromium is involved in  muscle function.</span></p>

<p>**News flash: A recent study published in Archives of Ophthalmology showed that in nearly 5,000 Europeans, those with the lowest levels of antioxidants were most at risk of developing advanced macular degeneration due to blue light. What is “blue light”? The visible part of sunlight that penetrates to the retina and allows us to see. Turns out that — yup, you guessed it — protection against the harmful effects of blue light is provided by the antioxidant vitamins C and E; the carotenoids (lutein and zeaxanthin), which filter blue light; and zinc.</p>
<p>Problem is, there’s no lutein aisle in the grocery store, and the foods that most often contain these nutritious benefits — vegetables such kale, chard, collards, and turnip greens and fruits such as oranges, papaya, and blueberries — don’t come in a prepackaged microwavable box. In our rush-and-timetable world, we’ve forgotten how to cook even these simple fruits and vegetables.</p>
<p>But never fear. Here, are 6 simple preparations and 6 superb cookbooks to help you give your eyes the treats they need (just call them “eye candy”).</p>
<p>1. Just about any greens you can think of, whether they be kale, chard, or mustard, can be steamed with a little water or stock (1/2 cup or less), a pinch of sea salt, and some minced garlic or shallot in a large sauté pan. Just make sure to remove the tough stems before cooking. A squeeze of lemon just before serving brightens the flavor.</p>
<p>2. During the summer months, young tender greens can be eaten raw in salads: if the idea of a kale salad scares you a little, try mixing unfamiliar greens in with traditional lettuce. <p>3. Want to get more berries in your diet but don’t want to eat fat-laden muffins? Try them as a topping on oatmeal in the morning. (I do that too, and I love it that way). It&#8217;s so easy and so tasty.<br />

Better yet, combine your fruits and veggies: a handful of currents or raisins makes a perfect accompaniment to everything from broccoli rabe (a classic vegetable in Italian cooking, now more widely available in the States) to kale (throw in some toasted pine nuts for an extra treat).</span></p>
<p><span>5. Face it. Unless you’re from the Southern U.S. or Africa, you probably don’t eat collard greens and have no idea how to prepare them. Which is a shame, as collards are a nutritional powerhouse: low in calories and loaded with vitamins A, B and C, calcium, beta carotene, and fiber. Eating them can reduce the risk of developing age-related macular degeneration and cataracts. You can get a quick, easy fix of collards by slivering them and adding them to soups and bean stews.</span></p>
<p><span>6. Here’s a salad secret: It’s not just lettuce anymore. Salads taste a lot better when you add stuff (and by “stuff,” we don’t mean high-calorie dressing). If you think salad is boring, try adding one of each of the following: nuts, cheese, and fruit. Think apples, pecans, and smoked Gouda, or figs, hazelnuts, and goat cheese. Let the lettuce be your canvas, and don’t be afraid to get a little crazy with the paint.</span></p>

<p><strong>What&#8217;s the Difference Between EPA and DHA?</strong></p>
<p>DHA  omega-3 is without a doubt the most complex and beneficial fatty acid  as far as the human body is concerned.  It&#8217;s a 22 carbon chain bond with  six double bonds.</p>
<p>This type of omega-3 is essential for the  growth and functional development of infants.  Babies constantly collect  DHA omega-3 in their brain for the first years of their life.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s  also required for maintenance of normal brain function in adults and is  needed in high concentrations for providing optimal mental performance  (cognitive and neurological function, learning ability, memory, focus,  etc.).</p>
<p>EPA omega-3 is another important essential fatty acid,  although not near as important is DHA is.  EPA has 20 carbon chain bonds  with 5 double bonds.<br />

<p>The main difference between EPA  and DHA is the benefits we get from each.  DHA without a doubt provides  the most benefits for brain, heart, and body health.  But there&#8217;s  another reason you want more DHA than EPA in a fish oil supplement.</p>
<p>Another  difference between EPA and DHA is the availability and conversion  efficiency of each.  Because you have to add two carbon bonds to EPA to  make DHA, it&#8217;s difficult for the body to convert it.  On the other hand,  all you have to do is remove 2 carbon bonds from DHA to make EPA, which  is much easier.</p>
<p>So when you look at it that way, more DHA omega-3 is preferable because:<br />
1) you use more of it than EPA and<br />
2) it can be easily  online buy  converted into any kind of omega-3 fatty acid.</p>
<p>When  looking for the ideal fish oil supplement, make sure that it contains  at least 250 mg of DHA and 100 mg of EPA.  This way, you only have to  take 2 capsules a day in order to reach the daily recommended amount of  DHA/EPA (combined) of at least 650 mg.</p>
<p>There are some other things  you should look for in a quality fish oil supplement as well.  Knowing  these things now could save you a lot of time and money as oppose to  learning them through trial-and- like I did.</p>
