Research: Increased Intake Of Omega-3 Increases Eye Health

Benefits Of Omega 3

Increased dietary intake of omega-3-polyunsaturated fatty acids found to reduce the risk of pathological retinal angiogenesis

DHA is a major structural component of retinal photoreceptor membranes, and it affects the permeability, fluidity and thickness of these membranes. EPA is the precursor to eicosanoids, hormone-like substances that control vasodilation/constriction (the widening/narrowing of blood vessels, the process regulates blood flow and pressure), blood coagulation and inflammation all of which affect eye health. Studies looking at the relationship of omega-3 to the prevalence of advanced macular degeneration (AMD) have also observed a protective effect.

National Eye Institute Examines Effect Of Omega 3

Dr. Chi-Chao Chan of the National Eye Institute in Bethesda, Md., examined the direct effect of omega-3 fatty acids on a mouse model of macular degeneration and found a diet with high levels of omega-3 fatty acids resulted in slower lesion progression — with improvement in some lesions.

Chan says the mice with slower disease progression had lower levels of inflammatory molecules and higher levels of anti-inflammatory molecules, which may explain the protective effect of omega-3 fatty acids.

Omega-3 fatty acids are found in high levels in cold water seafood — especially oily fish such as herring, mackerel, anchovies and sardines.

ps if you don’t like fish…or, if you don’t always have time to make fish on a routine basis, go for Omega 3 supplements.

Fish Oils Could Help Prevent Age-Related Blindness

omega 3

Superfoods containing omega 3 and fish oils may help prevent the most common cause of blindness in old age, say scientists.

The benefits of eating oily fish, like mackerel, and nuts are already recognised in reducing the risk of Alzheimer’s disease and heart attacks.

But new US research suggests omega 3 fatty acids can also protect against the loss of vision that develops with age, known as AMD (age-related macular degeneration).

Omega 3 Can Also Help To Improve Your Vision

Omega-3’s Improve Vision Health Too, Just as exercise does

Rebuild your Vision Today- Get Ready For Summer,
Maybe You Could Even Lose Those Glasses!

If you think “omega-3s” sounds like some sort of college fraternity, you’re not alone. Only in the past few years have scientists begun to enumerate the myriad benefits of these health-giving fatty acids, which have been called “the miracle food of the 21st century.”

Among these benefits: preventing heart disease, maintaining optimum blood pressure and cholesterol levels, and providing relief from joint pain, migraines, depression, autoimmune diseases, and many other conditions.

But that’s, as they say, not all.

As in other areas of preventive health, it seems that the long-chain omega-3s in fish may help protect our vision as we age. These omega-3s help protect against cataracts, glaucoma, and age-related macular degeneration—even dry eyes.

Omega-3 fats appear to help prevent optic nerve disorders, the most common of which is glaucoma. Various studies have revealed that Greenland Eskimos have lower rates of glaucoma than other populations, an observation attributed to their high consumption of omega-3 fish oil. (This finding is similar to the Japanese having lower rates of cancer than Western countries, also attributed to that country’s high consumption of omega-3-containing fish.)
