There are many myths and old wife tales and facts about vision. I did some research, and here are a few myths I found: And, remember, this is not scientific research, so it is not gospel

Myth: How many of us grew up with mom telling us “don’t sit so close to the TV, it will ruin you eyes?”

Fact: Parents have been saying this from the beginning of television, but, so far, no evidence proves this true. The American Academy of Ophthalmology says kids can sit close in front of a TV without eyestrain much better than adults. However make sure it is not because of near sightedness, and also, do not allow this for hour after hour because then you run the risk of near sight stress, or in other words, staring! And that is not good for the eyes.

Myth: Now here is a statement we have heard growing up “If you keep crossing your eyes, they will end up staying that way.”

Fact: So, the consensus is no, they will not stay that way. But, if your child keeps crossing eyes, especially the same eye, go and see an ophthalmologist and get an eye evaluation.

Myth: Bad eyesight is inherited.

Fact: That can be a yes and a no. Some eye problems / diseases are inherited, others are not.

Myth: Eating your carrots will improve vision.

Fact: This is also a yes and no answer. Carrots are very rich in vitamin A, and this vitamins is essential for sight, but it is only a very small factor in your eye nutrition. And, a bad lifestyle may even negate this. Improve your lifestyle, improve your vision!

Myth: Computer and monitor use will ruin your eyes.

Fact: Only if you do not regulate HOW you use the computer. When you use a computer for long extended periods at a time, your eyes blink much less than normal, they will do this with any type of “staring at close objects” for long periods of times. This will cause dry eyes, irritated eyes, and eye strain…. It is also called near point stress, and it is a big eye problem in today’s time.

Myth: Only males can be color blind

Fact: About eight percent of boys have some kind of degree of color blindness, but, less than one percent of girls do.

Myth: A baby is born with full size eyes

Fact: NO, the eye actually grows with the child.

Being that our feature article was about the rise of nearsightedness, we thought it would be a great time to remind you about the 10-10-10 rule.

Every time you are performing close vision work for over 10 consecutive minutes, look up and focus on anything that is at least 10 feet away, for at least 10 seconds. 10-10-10…

Incorporate this technique into everything you do up close. This will allow your internal “ciliary muscle” to expand for a few seconds and relieve the near-point stress. This technique, along with a few more simple ones just like it that you’ve learned in the Rebuild Your Vision Program will help to save your vision for years to come!

After the amazing results I achieved with the Rebuild Your Vision program, I searched for an explanation. In my research, I came across the following:

There was a controlled study conducted on a group of Inuit families in Barrow, Alaska, years ago by a very respected group of eye doctors. It evaluated the relation between genetics and the environment in bad vision.

It was an ideal setting in that parents and grandparents had little or no formal education, while children regularly attended public school.

The study results showed that the uneducated parents and grandparents had little or no form of myopia (nearsightedness), while nearly 58% of the children attending school were diagnosed as myopic.

A genetic malfunction increase of 58% over one generation would be impossible! Read The Whole Article Here

On another not, what about eye color, is it genetic?

The genetics of eye color are complicated, and color is determined by multiple genes. Some of the eye-color genes include EYCL1 (a green/blue eye-color gene located on chromosome 19), EYCL2 (a brown eye-color gene) and EYCL3 (a brown/blue eye-color gene located on chromosome 15). The once-held view that blue eye color is a simple recessive trait has been shown to be wrong. The genetics of eye color are so complex that almost any parent-child combination of eye colors can occur.

What Your Eyes Do When You Sleep

If Shakespeare wrote Hamlet today, his famous line “To sleep, perchance to dream” might sound a little different: “To sleep, certainly to dream–but I only remember the dreams I have during REM sleep stages.”

Not nearly as poetic, but then again, much more intriguing. In Shakespeare’s time, most people thought of sleep as an unchanging, dormant period of little interest. Hardly anything was known about sleep or dreaming. In fact, it wasn’t until the discovery of REM sleep at the relatively late date of 1953 that scientists knew much about sleep at all!

Studying infants in the 1950s, American physiologists Eugene Aserinsky and Nathaniel Kleitman reported that periods of eye movement and twitching occur during sleep. They named these periods “rapid eye movement” (REM) sleep. At first they assumed that REM sleep occurred only in babies, but later investigations proved it occurs not only in all humans, but in all mammals-even in birds.

Sleep Stages

REM Sleep

We typically have about three to five periods of REM sleep per night. The first rapid eye movement period usually begins about 70 to 90 minutes after we fall asleep. These periods occur at intervals of one to two hours and vary in length from five minutes to more than an hour. Periods of REM sleep seem to be shorter at the beginning of the night and longer toward morning.

About 20 percent of sleep is REM sleep. If you sleep seven or eight hours a buy online now night, only around an hour and half of that time is spent in REM sleep. However, the relative amount of REM sleep varies considerably with age: babies spend more than 80 percent of total sleep time in REM mode, while people over 70 spend less than 10 percent.

For those of us who think of sleep as a peaceful, largely static activity, we should think again: REM sleep is characterized by rapid, low-voltage brain waves and irregular breathing and heart rate. And the eye movements themselves, called saccades, are indeed rapid: The saccade is the fastest movement of an external part of the human body. The peak angular speed of the eye during a saccade reaches up to 1,000 degrees per second. However, our muscles do largely “turn off” during REM sleep, effectively paralyzing the body, except for involuntary muscle jerks.

Non-REM (NREM) Sleep

NREM sleep is divided into four stages of increasing depth, leading to REM sleep. In stage one, people often believe they are fully awake, although they are beginning to lose conscious awareness of the external environment. This stage can be thought of as a gateway between waking and sleep.

Stage four is the deepest stage of sleep. In contrast to REM sleep, during stage four the brain waves are slow and high voltage; breathing and heart rate are slow and regular; and blood pressure is low. It is very difficult to wake people who are in this state, and, if they do wake up, they are extremely groggy. This is the stage in which night ts and sleepwalking occur.

Dreaming

There’s no “perchance” about it: Everyone dreams, whether they remember their dreams or not. But most dreams-and almost all the dreams we can recall upon waking-occur during REM sleep.

Perhaps that is the reason our bodies’ muscles turn off during REM periods: If they didn’t, we would physically respond to the vivid dreams we have during REM sleep. Studies of people with malfunctioning REM systems show that those folks thrash around in their sleep, often punching their bedmates or hurting themselves as they act out their dreams.

Unanswered Questions, Theories, and Fun Facts

We know sleep is vital to our bodies and that REM sleep, in particular, seems to be intrinsically important, as it is so physiologically different from the other phases of sleep. If dreams turn out to have some important function for humans (we still don’t know whether animals dream), then perhaps we need REM sleep solely in order to dream.

Another theory is that the amount of REM sleep per night in a species is closely correlated with the developmental stage of newborns. The platypus for example, whose newborns are completely helpless and undeveloped, has eight hours of REM sleep per night; animals that can hunt, eat, keep warm, and defend themselves soon after birth (for example, dolphins or horses) need almost no REM sleep.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, there were more than 235,000 toy-related injuries treated in U.S. emergency rooms in 2008; nearly three quarters of those injured were children under age 15. So, be careful this year with your eyes. Watch out for kids toys that can hurt the eyes, watch out for your eyes in the winter sun… You only get two eyes so be careful.

Vision Fact: Blinking

Blinking cleanses and lubricates the eyes. When we blink, salty secretions from the tear glands flush away small dust particles on the eye’s surface and moisten the exposed portion of the eyeball. Infants blink once every minute or so, but adults blink an average of 10 to 15 times a minute.

Researchers from the Richard Stockton College of New Jersey ran an experiment on 62 people to gauge creative thinking. After a first try at the task, some of the participants were told to shift their eyes horizontally back and forth for 30 seconds, an exercise that boosts the communication between the hemispheres. Those subjects performed much better on the creativity test the second time around than a control group who stared straight ahead. online sales

By now, we all know that the worldwide economy is in rough shape, and it’s not likely to recover overnight. Everyone’s looking for ways to cut back their spending, and sometimes, it turns out, the old ways our grandmothers practiced are the best: instead of Windex, clean your windows with vinegar and water. To cure a cigarette habit, take before breakfast 1/2 teaspoon each of rochelle salts and cream of tartar; also chew ginseng root and swallow the juice. Use old shirts cut into rags to clean the house instead of purchasing paper towels.

Well, it turns out Grandma knew a lot about eye care, too. The eye exercises in the Rebuild Your Vision program are based on techniques that have been around for decades, way before contact lenses and Lasik surgery were invented. These time-tested techniques not only save your vision, but they also save you money—plenty, as it turns out.

“My overall vision has improved during the 30 day course which I’ve just completed.
Consequently, I no longer need glasses for reading and the computer…” – Steve Cooper

After all, it is recommended that people who wear glasses visit a doctor every two years. If your prescription has changed, you will need new lenses at the very least and will probably want to update the frames as well. And with health-care costs rising, glasses, especially designer frames, are increasingly expensive and usually not covered by your health-care plan. In addition, many people have more than one pair of glasses just in case a pair gets broken or misplaced.

With contact lenses, you not only have to pay for the lenses (which, again, many health-care plans do not cover), but also the ongoing costs of solution, rewetting drops, and lens cases. If you add it all up, it’s a pretty penny:

Doctor visit: $150 every two years
Prescription glasses: $320 every two years
Contacts: $48 a month ($576/year)
Contact supplies: $20 a month ($240/year)

TOTAL: $2,102 every two years!

When you do the math, you can see that the Rebuild Your Vision program is not just great for your eyes—it’s great for your wallet as well.

Here are some other money-saving vision-care tips:

Follow the 10-10-10 rule. We can’t say it enough: this simple exercise could save your eyesight from deterioration—and it’s FREE!

associated with reading, watching television, and computer use is a major cause of vision problems. The 10-10-10 exercise relieves near-point stress by allowing your internal “ciliary muscle” to expand for a few seconds: every time you are performing close vision work for over 10 consecutive minutes, look up and focus on anything that is at least 10 feet away, for at least 10 seconds.

Take your vitamins. There’s a reason why nutrition is such a hot topic these days. Research has shown over and over again that getting the right vitamins can not only help maintain your vision, but also prevent diseases like macular degeneration, glaucoma and catarcts. Which saves you a ton in medical costs down the road.

And here’s another tip: Many of the same foods that are great for your eyes, such as lutein-packed tomatoes, carrots, spinach and squash, are also inexpensive and easy to prepare.

Finally, invest in a good pair of sunglasses. Now, we know what you’re thinking: why end an article on money-saving tips by telling me to buy sunglasses? Aren’t good sunglasses expensive? And the answer is, sunglasses may be one of the single best investments you can make in your vision. And they don’t have to be spendy to work.

Sunglasses protect our eyes from UV radiation, which in the short term can cause photokeratis (a kind of eye sunburn) and in the long term pill identifier can lead to cataracts and macular degeneration. More important than the designer or the lens color or style is the degree to which the lenses filter out UV rays. Make sure your sunglasses block 99 to 100 percent of both UV-A and UV-B rays by looking for a label that says, “Provides 100% UV protection” or ” Provides 100% UV400 protection.” The American Optometric Association offers a Seal of Acceptance for sunglasses that block 99 percent to 100 percent of UV radiation. Look for this seal to be sure you are getting the maximum protection.
