<p>Here is an example, told to many eye patients by their doctors: You need new glasses because, as you age, your eyeball changes its shape!</p>

<p>Yeah, right. <em>The eyeball itself cannot change shape</em>. Just think about this; Your eye socket is made of bone, the eyeball fits in that bone socket&#8230;. it will not change shape.<br />
So, no, the real eye problem concerning most people is not the eyeball changing shape, like getting longer or shorter,ridiculous but, what actually happens is that the <strong>lens muscles</strong> get flabby and out of shape!</p>
<p><strong>How is it that your lens muscles get out of shape?</strong></p>

<p>The iris is a muscle and it controls the pupil. The job of the iris is to regulate how much light comes into the eye. But, it&#8217;s not about the iris, it&#8217;s about the muscles that change the actual <strong>shape of the lens (not the eyeball).</strong></p>
<p><span style="font-family: Arial;">Now, proper focus simply means changing the shape of your <strong>lens</strong> allowing rays of light that enter the eye to hit the retina with total pinpoint accuracy.</span></p>
<p>Of course, looking from near point (close objects) to far points (far away objects) takes different focusing abilities.</p>
<p>And, because this comes so naturally it is not even noticeable to you!</p>
<p><strong>So, How Can You Strengthen These Eye Muscles?</strong></p>
<p><span style="font-family: Arial;">Your ciliary muscles (that&#8217;s the eye muscles that control the lens) will become weak. And mostly it is from lack of exercise. Now that is a surprise right? Muscles that become weak from lack of exercise. One way to exercise these muscles is: Alternate on a regular basis between looking from near to far. This will increase the flexibility of your eye lenses. Just like exercise increases the flexibility of other muscles.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: Arial;">One of the problems today is near point stress. That is, we are consistently looking at objects that are close (near), like computer screens, iPhones, screens etc. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: Arial;"><strong>One rule you can implement right away</strong> is the 10-10-10 rule.<br />
EVERY 10 MINUTES, LOOK AWAY FOR 10 SECONDS AT AN OBJECT AT LEAST 10 FEET AWAY.</span></p>

<p>In the last 10 years there are more and more people that need contacts or glasses to read.  Many say that this is because of the increased computer usage, smart phone screens and more television watching.  All these activities require your eyes to focus on one object, for long periods of time.<br />
You don&#8217;t have to give these up for eye health, but, you do need to implement ways, such as eye exercises, to help you from damaging your vision.</p>

<p>Your eyes have muscles just like the rest of your body.  And, exercising these muscles helps keep them in optimum shape. Unfortunately, many people think that getting stronger glasses over and over again is the answer.  It is not!<br />
The Fact:  If you start exercising your eyes, and taking care of your eyes, you do not need to keep going for stronger vision aids, you may even be able to get rid of the glasses you have.<br />
<span id="more-6007"></span></p>
<p>Of course, there are always exception like those individuals who have vision / eye problems because of trauma or other physical problems, or diseases such as diabetes However, these are not the conditions referred to here.<br />
Many people have been able to return their eyesight to &#8220;normal vision.&#8221;<br />
Here are some tips and exercises to help you improve your vision, and protect your vision.</p>
<p><strong>1&#8230; Blinking Is Important!</strong><br />
Blinking helps keep your eyes moist, blinking helps keep your eyes focused. If you are on any kind of monitor, or screen, you need to become aware that you will stop blinking, and make sure you DO blink. This is very important for your eye health.<br />
Blinking gives your eyes consistent small breaks of darkness for rejuvenation.</p>
<p><strong>2&#8230; Palming Is So Simple And Effective</strong><br />
I have written about palming before; it is so simple, and it can be done anywhere, anytime.  It&#8217;s a great way to give your eyes a break from any &#8220;near point&#8221; eye stress.<br />
Here Is How You Do Palming:<br />
Start by breathing deeply, and calmly.  Get in the relaxation mode.<br />
Get comfortable<br />
Warm your palms, either by holding a hot drink, or by blowing on them, or even rubbing them.   Make sure your palms are NOT hot.  Then, cup your palms over your eyes (without touching them).  And hold them there for a while.   do this a number of times.<br />
I know it doesn&#8217;t sound like much, but, you will be amazed how much this can help your eyes.</p>
<p><strong>3&#8230; Follow An Imaginary The Figure Eight</strong><br />
This is simple and effective and will help you improve your reading. It improves your flexibility.<br />
Step 1:  Imagine that there is a large Figure 8 at about 10 feet away.  When you can visualize this, flip it over in your mind and very slowly start to trace it. Try to trace it both ways.</p>
<p><strong>4.. Focusing Far &amp; Near</strong><br />
Again, I have written about this before, it is easy, and you can do it anywhere!<br />
Make sure you are comfortable and relaxed.<br />
Put your thumb at about 10 inches away, and focus on the thumb tip.<br />
Then, focus at an object about 10 to 20 ft away.<br />
Keep switching between both objects, it&#8217;s a great eye exercises.</p>

<p>Often we take our sight for granted, until we realize, that our sight is NOT guaranteed into old age.  Heck, our sight is NEVER guaranteed.</p>
<p>And although our sight does NOT have to fail as we age, it often does because we do not take care of them.  Much like our heart fails us if we do not take care of our heart health.</p>
<p>Such problems as obesity &amp; diabetes are epidemic right now, and both will impact your heart, your general health, and yes even your eyesight.</p>

<p><strong>What can affect your eye health?  Well, such things as:</strong><br />
1. Not exercising, being a couch potato, not eating for your well being&#8230;a lack of good nutrition and exercise will cause your eyesight to suffer as you age.<br />
2. Exposing your eyes to toxins, such as smoke.<br />
3. Eye strain from staring too much at a computer / cell screen.  Often we can stare for hours at a small object causing tremendous eye strain.  You need to learn how to relax your eyes!</p>
<p><strong>So then, how can you improve your vision, your eye health?</strong></p>

I know, you can&#8217;t really avoid the sun, but you can protect your eyes by using the proper sunglasses. By that I don&#8217;t mean you have to buy designer glasses, or glasses that will cost you hundreds of dollars. So <strong>choosing the right sunglasses</strong> is imperative!</p>
<p>Sunglasses are actually labeled based on the guidelines for UV protection established by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). There are two forms of UV light that affect your general health:</p>
<p>UVA, which causes skin tanning and aging.<br />
UVB, which causes sunburn and also skin cancer</p>
<p><strong>Before you buy your sunglasses,</strong> check out the <strong>&#8220;ANSI&#8221; label;</strong> those inexpensive glasses can protect you.  Just read the labels!<span id="more-5926"></span></p>
<p><strong>Cosmetic:</strong> Lightly tinted lenses, good for daily wear. Blocks 70% of UVB rays, 20% of UVA, and 60% of visible light.<br />
<strong>General purpose:</strong> Medium to dark lenses, fine for most outdoor recreation. Blocks 95% of UVB, 60% of UVA, and 60% to 90% of visible light. Most sunglasses fall into this category.<br />
<strong>Special purpose:</strong> Extremely dark lenses with UV blockers, recommended for places with very bright conditions such as beaches and ski slopes. Blocks 99% of UVB, 60% of UVA, and 97% of visible light.</p>
<p>Just because a lens is darker, it doesn&#8217;t me it provides better UV protection for your eyes than a lighter lens would.<br />
If you are confused about this, talk to your eye doctor!</p>

But the injuries don’t usually result from the ball itself-rather, loose elbows or fingers are what cause problems. Dr. H. Culver Boldt, associate professor of ophthalmology at the University of Iowa College of Medicine, explains: “If a basketball hits you in the face, the bones around the eye socket usually prevent the ball from making direct contact with the eye. However, a finger or elbow to the eye can distort the shape of the eye significantly. Blood vessels get stretched and can break, causing bleeding. Retinal detachment is also a concern.”</p>

<p>Even the relatively quiet sport of weight-lifting is not immune: Last year, Brazilian researchers found that weight lifting maneuvers such as bench presses can temporarily boost internal eye pressure. “Prolonged weight lifting could be a potential risk factor for the development or progression of glaucoma,” they concluded in an article in the Archives of Ophthalmology.</p>
<p>The outcome of eye trauma can range from temporary cosmetic disfigurement to permanent scarring, visual distortion and blindness. Abrasions and contusions are the most common injuries. An article from the University of Kentucky Ophthalmology department notes that a black or red eye, limited eye movement, abnormal pupil size and shape, eye protrusion, blood within the eye, or a cut/penetration of the lid or eye are all signs that you should get to a doctor, pronto.</p>
<p>It is estimated that nearly three-quarters of recreational eye injuries affect people under age 25 and about half affect children under age 15. The University of Iowa’s Dr. Boldt remarks that “[children's] physical development and athletic immaturity, coupled with their fearless abandon when playing, tends to put them at greater risk for an eye injury.” Then there’s the fact that, although we would never let our children skateboard or bicycle without a helmet, we routinely let them participate in other, seemingly “innocent” sports unguarded. The U.S. Eye Injury Registry in 1995 suggested that 82 percent of serious eye injuries occurred without the benefit of eye protection.</p>
<p>So what can you do? Beyond supervised athletics with eye protection rules, preventing eye injuries begins with educating participants about the risks specific to each activity and the value of eye protection. This requires selection of appropriate protective eyewear and lens material and instruction on their proper use.</p>

<p><strong>1. Eat Spinach twice a week.</strong><br />
Spinach is easy to find and easy to cook with, so this one should be easy. Lutein, a nutrient contained in Spinach, helps to prevent age-related macular degeneration and cataracts. Lutein is best absorbed with fat, so trying frying some with a small amount of oil to add to breakfasts or dinners.</p>
<p><strong>2. Avoid Direct Eye Contact with Air Conditioned Air</strong><br />
In the car on a hot day, it’s very tempting to aim your air conditioning at your eyes. The dry air will drain your eyes of moisture which can lead to corneal abrasions and in severe, chronic cases even blindness.</p>
<p><strong>3. Wear Sunglasses when outside</strong><br />
Prolonged exposure to sunlight can lead to the development of cataracts and growths on the eye, including cancer. In the same way as air conditioning, wind can dry your eyes and cause further problems. To avoid these complications, wear sunglasses when outdoors &#8211; if not all the time then at least when the sun is shining. In no circumstances should you ever look directly at the sun, even when wearing sunglasses.</p>
<p><strong>4. Remove Eye Makeup before going to bed</strong><br />
It’s important to use a makeup remover to remove any eye makeup before going to bed in order to prevent small pieces falling into your eye and scratching the cornea.</p>
<p><strong>5. Remember to blink!</strong><br />
It might sound simple, obvious and downright silly, but the fact is that people often stare too much at their TV or computer without blinking. Blinking helps clean the eye and prevent eye strain, so make sure you’re allowing your eyes to blink naturally.</p>
