National Eye Institute Examines Effect Of Omega 3

Dr. Chi-Chao Chan of the National Eye Institute in Bethesda, Md., examined the direct effect of omega-3 fatty acids on a mouse model of macular degeneration and found a diet with high levels of omega-3 fatty acids resulted in slower lesion progression — with improvement in some lesions.

Chan says the mice with slower disease progression had lower levels of inflammatory molecules and higher levels of anti-inflammatory molecules, which may explain the protective effect of omega-3 fatty acids.

Omega-3 fatty acids are found in high levels in cold water seafood — especially oily fish such as herring, mackerel, anchovies and sardines.

ps if you don’t like fish…or, if you don’t always have time to make fish on a routine basis, go for Omega 3 supplements.

Fish Oils Could Help Prevent Age-Related Blindness

omega 3

Superfoods containing omega 3 and fish oils may help prevent the most common cause of blindness in old age, say scientists.

The benefits of eating oily fish, like mackerel, and nuts are already recognised in reducing the risk of Alzheimer’s disease and heart attacks.

But new US research suggests omega 3 fatty acids can also protect against the loss of vision that develops with age, known as AMD (age-related macular degeneration).

As We Get Older, We Can Work On Our Vision

Vision Improvement

As we get older it is normal that our vision changes. Our eyes may find it harder to read small print, take longer to adjust from light to dark and be more sensitive to glare from sunlight or unshielded light bulbs. There’s a decline in depth perception that can make it hard to judge distances, and perceiving contrasts and colours may become more difficult.

Sight provides much pleasure, but it’s also an important part of staying safe and independent. Because our eyes do so much for us, they deserve good care and attention.
