Computer vision syndrome (CVS) is a temporary condition resulting from focusing the eyes on a computer display for protracted, uninterrupted periods of time. Some symptoms of CVS include headaches, blurred vision, neck pain, fatigue, eye strain, dry, irritated eyes, and difficulty refocusing the eyes. These symptoms can be further aggravated by improper lighting conditions (ie. bright overhead lighting or glare) or air moving past the eyes (e.g. overhead vents, direct air from a fan). CVS has not been proven to cause any permanent damage to the eye.
CVS is caused by decreased blinking reflex while working long hours focusing on computer screens. The normal blink rate in human eyes is 16-20 per minute.

Tips for relieving dry eye include:
- Drink at least six 8-oz glasses of water to stay hydrated.
- If you spend long hours in front of the computer, remember to blink at regular intervals.
- Wear sunglasses to protect eyes from drying wind.
- Consider using a humidifier to moisten dry air.

Tip For Today: Dry eyes
Dry eyes could be from: aging, from eyestrain (especially computers), exposure to sun (spending a lot of time outside?), it will be caused from smoke, or from the environment.
The U.S. National Library of Medicine gives these tips to soothe dry eyes:
- Use artificial tears, or other moisturizing eye drops or ointments. ( Check your Natural Health Store…)
- Avoid smoking, and exposure to secondhand smoke. ( This is a no-brainer
- Avoid direct exposure to wind or air conditioning.
- Use a humidifier in your home, particularly during the dry winter months.
- Rest your eyes, and blink often.
