Dear Reader,

Millions of people who use the computer daily report vision problems.

Are you one of these people? Do you…

- have dry eyes that get irritated?
- do you have some trouble focusing?
- sometimes, even double vision
These are just 2 of the symptoms of long computer use.

These symptoms are known as:  “Computer Vision Syndrome,” which the American Optometric Association (AOA) defines as being “related to near work – experienced during computer use.”

Some of the reasons are:
- focusing for long periods of t ime, without blinking
- our eyes have to strain because the items on the screen are made up of “pixels”

How can you help yourself?

We use our eyes every single moment that we are awake.  We use our eyes to see the awesome beauty that is around us.  And yet, many of us tend to ignore our eye health – and do not even go to our eye doctors on a regular basis.

Many eye problems can only be detected by an eye exam, that’s why it is imperative to become proactive in your eye care.

October is eye health month…so, start to get to know your eyes.

Here Are Some Eye Protection Tips

- Make sure that you protect your eyes from UV rays.  Even in the winter!

- When you are doing work, at home or at a business, wear the right protective equipment.

- Avoid computer eye strain…don’t focus on one area for hours at a time.  Every 10-15 minutes look away, either the other end of the room, across the street, whatever.  Give your eyes a break.

Protect Your Vision-Eye Opening Facts-Part 1

I read an article in Canadian Living that reminds us that our eyes are not just “physical” but also poetic. Our eyes are referred to as windows to our soul, stars in the night sky, diamonds that glitter.

But, as this magazine mentions, we need to take more care of our eyes. Eye health can and must be maintained, and even worked at! This includes regular visits to your eye doctor and also, alternative eye care.

Here Are A Few Eye Health Problems. Learn to recognize these and deal with them right away!

1 – Conjunctivitis or, also known as pink eye: The membrane covering the whites of your eyes are inflamed.

Common among children. It can be from a viral or even a bacterial infection. Or sometimes caused by allergies, or from the environment.
The whites of your eyes are pink and probably itching. There may be a discharge. Go to the doctor.

Don’t rub your eyes, and be very conscious of what you touch, and never share any washcloths, towels etc.

2 – Strabismus, or crossed eyes:
I have read that this affects about 5% of pre school kids. There can be numerous causes, including tumors or it can be hereditary. Again, always see the doctor. Depending on why the eyes are crossed, they can be corrected by glasses, surgery and results are usually excellent!

Eye Health – Become Proactive In YOUR Vision Care

Imagine if you could walk into a restaurant and order a dinner formulated for your specific nutritional requirements: the Triathlete’s Plate would feature lots of pasta and a steak; the High Blood Pressure Entrée would consist of grilled chicken breast, a salad of fresh greens with low-sodium dressing, and a whole-wheat roll with low-sodium margarine; the Pregnancy Plate would include foods that are high in folic acid, such as orange juice, green leafy vegetables, beans, peanuts and broccoli – as well as a special dessert crafted to fulfill your odd cravings (“Peanut butter-and-banana torte with chocolate sauce? No problem.”)

Now think about the Eye Health Special. You know from past Rebuild Your Vision newsletter articles that it would include foods high in beta carotene, such as carrots, sweet potatoes, apricots, winter squash, pumpkin, cantaloupe, and mangoes. You also know that foods high in lutein – carrots, corn, kale, spinach, Swiss chard, collard, mustard greens, and red peppers – would also be on the menu. But scientists have discovered some new foods that may be beneficial to eye health – something to think about the next time you visit the grocery store.
